The Manitoba Special Olympics took place last weekend, June 20–22, with athletes excited to compete from all across the province.

This year, the games were held in Winnipeg, with events including track and field, swimming, softball, and bocce.

A great group of athletes

Regional coordinator of the Eastman Special Olympics organization, Cathy Wiebe, says it was an all-around fantastic weekend.

“We had 25 athletes competing (on the Eastman teams). Pretty much everyone on the Eastman teams won awards. We have a great group (of athletes).” Wiebe says.

Wiebe reflected on the meaningful experiences of watching coaches and their athletes together.

"It’s a chance for them (the athletes) to do anything they want to do, to feel good about themselves, get out and be physically active, have friends." Wiebe says.

Longer season, lasting memories

The season was longer than normal, running into late June instead of wrapping up in May.

"It was a very long season... but when we got there (Manitoba Special Olympics), we were really excited to be there because that meant we had made it." Wiebe says.

Now, the Eastman teams are heading into their off-season, but this doesn’t mean the fun will end.

The Eastman athletes will be participating in the Taste of Summer Charity BBQ, as well as a few parades over the rest of the summer.

“We’ll find a way (for you) to get you involved. Everybody is welcome - volunteers, athletes, just come and be a part of us. We’re all here together.” Wiebe says.
