The Moose Jaw Miller Express snapped a five-game losing skid after defeating the Fort McMurray Giants 3–0 on Thursday night.
The Miller Express played a doubleheader in Fort McMurray on Thursday, dropping the first game 3–1 to the Energy City Cactus Rats from Spruce Grove.
All of the scoring in that game happened in the third inning. Austin Gurney gave Moose Jaw a 1–0 lead in the top half of the inning, but a three-run home run by Drew Ambercrombie scored the winning runs for the Cactus Rats. The loss extended Moose Jaw’s losing streak to five games.
The game ended after seven innings as the Miller Express returned to the field to face the Giants. Moose Jaw’s pitching staff allowed just two hits in the 3–0 win.
Thomas Soto opened the scoring in the fifth inning with a single to bring in Tanner DeGrazia. William Edwards then made it 2–0 with a ground-out RBI that scored Andrew Niaves.
Soto drove in Moose Jaw’s third run with a single to right field in the top of the seventh inning.
Joe Gutierrez picked up the win on the mound, allowing two hits and striking out two over five innings. Kaden Noble came in for the save, pitching a perfect inning with two strikeouts.
The Miller Express wrap up their Alberta road swing this weekend in Fort McMurray. They face the Giants on Friday night and the Cactus Rats on Saturday afternoon. Moose Jaw will have a couple of days off before returning to Saskatchewan to host the Swift Current 57s on Tuesday at Ross Wells Park. First pitch is at 6:05 p.m.
