Portage la Prairie is in for a hot streak this weekend, but not without a few atmospheric surprises. As residents prep their barbecues and beach towels for the final weekend of June, Environment Canada says it’s best to keep an eye on the sky.

“We're shaping up for a pretty warm weekend,” says Matt Loney, a meteorologist with Environment Canada. “We’ve got temperatures in the mid to upper 20s starting today and continuing through to the middle of next week.”

While the heat will certainly feel like summer, Loney warns that the weather won’t be without its unsettled moments.

“There is some instability in the atmosphere which brings a risk of thunderstorms almost every day heading into Monday,” he explains.

Storm systems were already active west of Portage this morning (Friday), with a chance that lingering cells could creep into the region as the day progresses. A more organized cold front is expected to arrive later tonight, bringing renewed chances of thunderstorm activity into the overnight hours and early Saturday morning.

“This pattern continues through the weekend. While the long-term forecast might not specifically call for storms every day, the conditions are there for showers or thunderstorms, particularly in the afternoons," he adds.

For those wondering about Canada Day plans, the early word is promising.

“It looks like things should stabilize by July 1st. We’re currently forecasting sunshine and a high of 26 degrees. Right now, it also looks like there’s less risk of thunderstorms, if the models hold like they're suggesting right now.”

Before the celebrations begin, those in southwestern Manitoba should take note that this evening could bring more than just rain.

“The latest forecast has areas west of Portage la Prairie, including Brandon and much of southwestern Manitoba, under the potential for severe weather. That means wind gusts up to 110 kilometres, hail as large as 4 to 6 centimetres, heavy downpours, and even a slight risk of tornadoes,” he notes.

As for Saturday and Sunday, the hazard level appears to taper off slightly, but the threat of localized showers and storms still lingers.

“Today is the day to be most cautious. Check the forecast regularly, and keep alerts turned on because conditions can change quickly.”
