The Weyburn Canoe and Kayak Club saw an influx of new board members since putting out a call in May for more help. Lindsay Sterling said she didn't want to see the club go under, so she hopped on board.
"I wanted to be there to support it and give back to the community because it's done so much for me and my kids," she shared. "My kids love being out on the water. I've been canoeing and kayaking since I was 17 years old, and I taught my kids and they just love it."
She said her daughter will now be one of the camp leaders for the summer day camp with the WCKC, and her son a junior leader. She said both of her boys enjoyed attending the camps when they were young.
Sterling said she loves that anyone can try out the sport all summer long at Nickle Lake Regional Park, with their rental facility adjacent to the beach.
"I have had my own paddle board, but I did use the rentals at the club because it's just so much more convenient. You don't have to haul big equipment down there. Otherwise, you need a truck or something or a rack to haul your equipment, and everything's just provided."
She said they have a variety of equipment available to rent from 4 to 8 p.m. on weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends.
"We provide canoes, kayaks, paddle boards, paddles, and life jackets, so everything you need to paddle is there. We even have a fishing Kayak, so you can take that out and you can go fishing."
In addition to the day camp, and some favourites like the Glow Row and Paddle Paint Night, the club has plans for some exciting new activities this summer as well.
"I actually just received my certification to be a Kayak Instructor, so I'm going to start putting on some beginner lessons for adults, so just watch our Facebook and Instagram for those," said Sterling.
Events like the Paddle Paint Night are great fundraisers, she added, as the equipment needs to be replaced over time due to wear and tear.
