The Okotoks Museum is hosting a weekly walk to teach about Okotoks' history.
For the third consecutive summer, the Okotoks Museum is hosting its Wednesday Walkabouts, which offer a unique way to share the history of Okotoks.
"It really is my favourite time of the year, because, well, it's an opportunity to get outside of the museum," says Kathy Coutts, who works at the Okotoks Museum and Archives. "I know some people have never been inside the museum. This is a way of getting information outside of the four walls and out onto the streets. Sometimes it's really hard to talk about buildings within the museum compared to getting out and showing where they were once in the community."
Coutts adds that these tours help bring the building they are discussing and its history to life.
"It's just a different way of storytelling."
Each walk has a different focus.
"All of the walks occur in the downtown area, and I thought I'd run out of topics last year, because last year there where, I think, nine during July and August. But, there's so many different themes. I think there's only one tour this year that is a duplicate of last year. And that's the one about school days."
The tour that is happening on July 2, for instance, is about Fires, Floods, and UFOs, because July 2 is also World UFO Day.
According to Coutts, she has a few UFO stories that are related to Okotoks.
"Imagine that."
They are doing two tours along Elma Street, because it has so many historic homes on it, that Coutts will talk about the homes on one side of the street one week and then the other the following week.
She added the fires and floods portion because Okotoks has seen its share of both over the years.
Due to the construction happening near the Museum this summer, the route has been adjusted this year, but people still meet at the museum.
Each tour is about an hour to an hour and a half long and is free to attend.
Walkabout Wednesday starts on Wednesday, July 2, and will run until Wednesday, August 27, with each tour beginning at 10 a.m.
"There's so many stories to tell and I'm quite excited to share those with the community."
