Environment Canada has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for parts of southeastern Manitoba, including the Rural Municipality of Hanover, Steinbach, Niverville, and Grunthal. The alert was issued Saturday afternoon and remains in effect as unstable weather conditions continue across the region.
A humid and unstable air mass over the Interlake, Red River Valley and eastern Manitoba is creating conditions favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening.

Hail reported in Dominion City, rotation near St. Malo
There have already been signs of dangerous weather. At 3:30 p.m., hail was reported in Dominion City, and there was a report of cloud rotation near St. Malo.
Environment Canada warns that some storms today may be capable of producing severe wind gusts and hail up to the size of baseballs.
“These storms can damage property, buildings and large stands of trees,” the agency said. “There is a risk of life-threatening injury.”

Thunderstorm safety reminders
People in the watch area are advised to stay indoors if severe weather approaches.
“If threatening weather approaches, take cover in a basement or interior room,” Environment Canada says. “If outside, protect yourself from flying debris and hail. When thunder roars, go indoors!”
Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when conditions are favourable for storms that may produce damaging hail, wind, or rain.

Lightning is a serious threat, and large hail can result in injury and extensive damage to property.
