On Sunday afternoon, Environment Canada issued a heat warning for several areas near Airdrie, including Rocky View County, specifically near Chestermere, Dalroy, Dalemead, Irricana, Beiseker, and Kathryn.
"Daytime high temperatures between 29 and 35 degrees Celsius combined with overnight lows near 14 degrees Celsius are expected starting Monday. The hottest weather is expected mid-week, with cooler temperatures expected by Friday," the warning noted.
Residents of and visitors to the warned regions are advised to take the following precautions to protect themselves, their families and their neighbours. These include rescheduling outdoor activities to cooler hours, taking frequent breaks from the heat, and spending time in cooled indoor spaces where possible.
Drink plenty of water and other non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages to stay hydrated. People are also reminded to check for children or pets before exiting their vehicles and never leave anyone or anything inside a closed vehicle.
Monitor for symptoms of heat stroke or heat exhaustion, such as high body temperature, lack of sweat, confusion, fainting, and unconsciousness. Residents should pay particular attention to individuals who are at greater risk, including infants, children, seniors, and people with pre-existing health conditions.
Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion.
As of Sunday, no heat warning is in effect in Airdrie.
