The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to three separate structure fires between Saturday night and Sunday morning, according to a City of Winnipeg news release.
The first incident occurred around 10:10 p.m. on Saturday in the 0-100 block of Higgins Avenue. Fire crews arrived to find smoke and flames coming from a house.
They initially used a defensive approach before transitioning to an offensive attack, bringing the fire under control by 11:23 p.m. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation and no damage estimates are currently available.
Shortly after midnight, at 1:32 a.m. on Sunday, WFPS was called to a commercial building fire in the 600 block of Logan Avenue.
Crews encountered heavy smoke and flames and called in additional resources, including two more pump trucks and an aerial ladder. A drone was also deployed to aid in situational awareness.
Firefighters used a defensive strategy from outside the building. Due to safety concerns, emergency demolition of the building is being arranged to fully extinguish the fire and check for lingering hot spots. No injuries were reported, and the fire is under investigation.
The third fire was reported at 7:19 a.m. on Sunday in a vacant and boarded-up home in the 400 block of Aberdeen Avenue. Firefighters again encountered visible flames and smoke and had the fire under control by 8:17 a.m.
No injuries were reported. This fire is also under investigation, and no damage estimates have been released.
The City reminds residents to call 911 if they see someone entering or tampering with a vacant building. If a building appears compromised but no one is seen entering, residents are encouraged to report it to 311 by phone or online.
