Winnipeg Transit officially rolled out its largest service transformation to date Monday morning, launching a new Primary Transit Network alongside expanded on-request service zones.

The updated system, which went live at 5:32 a.m. on Sunday with the first bus departing from Portage Avenue and Spence Street, is centred on a "spine-and-feeder model." The new network aims to simplify routes, improve frequency, and enhance connectivity across the city.

"Winnipeg needs a more modern, reliable transit system, and today we delivered," said Mayor Scott Gillingham in a city-issued news release. "This is the biggest overhaul of transit service in our history."

Coun. Janice Lukes, chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Public Works, echoed that sentiment, calling the change a "monumental day" for both Winnipeg Transit and the city. "Winnipeggers can expect a more efficient and accessible service," she said.

The Primary Transit Network functions as the backbone of the redesigned system, with feeder routes circulating through neighbourhoods to connect passengers to the main routes. This model builds on the structure introduced with the Blue Line in 2020.

As part of the overhaul, Winnipeg Transit has also expanded its On-Request service from four to 12 zones.

To support riders during the transition, the City has deployed street teams to assist at high-traffic transit locations in the days following the launch.

While the City says the redesign will provide service that is more frequent, direct, connected and simplified, not all riders are convinced.

Some Winnipeggers have taken to social media to express frustration over longer commute times and increased transfers under the new system.

Trip planning tools, including Navigo and the Transit App, have been updated with the new routes. More information is available at winnipeg.ca/primarytransitnetwork.
