The project to replace the HWY 2 over Trans-Canada HWY 1 overpass continues to make steady progress as it enters its fourth month.
Construction on new concrete abutments and piers for the northbound bridges was completed this month, allowing for the installation of bridge girders. Work on installing the new bridge deck has now begun and could be complete by the end of this construction season.
New on and off-ramps are currently being constructed, and a route for over-dimensional loads only—including farm equipment and grain bins—was established recently and signage denoting the route has since been installed. This new route will allow over-dimensional loads to reroute around the construction site.
North and southbound traffic on HWY 2 will continue to be rerouted over the southbound bridge while work continues on the northbound bridge and traffic from the exit ramps will be detoured as needed.
Once complete, the $33.7 million project will see the height of the twin overpasses raised to 5.3 metres, greatly reducing the need for rerouting of commercial trucks while also reducing the risk of collisions from over height traffic.
