A reported vehicle-versus-cyclist incident near Austin prompted a swift response from local firefighters but it turned out to be something else entirely.
Firefighter already on scene
According to an update from the Austin Fire Department, the call came in at 12:17 p.m. on Saturday, June 29. Crews were dispatched to the intersection of the Trans-Canada Highway and Provincial Road 352.
“A firefighter in the area at the time of dispatch was able to attend the scene immediately and provide assistance and update responding crews,” the department notes in a social media post.
When crews arrived, they found an individual sitting upright beside a bicycle in the ditch.
No other vehicle involved
“An individual traveling west was found sitting by their bicycle, conscious and sitting up,” the department says.
The incident was originally believed to involve a vehicle, but further investigation revealed that was not the case.
“Upon further investigation, it is believed that no other vehicle was involved in the matter, and the cyclist had simply stopped in the ditch to rest,” the department adds.
Paramedics assessed the cyclist, who was transported to hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the days prior.
Crews check for flare-ups nearby
Before returning to the fire hall, firefighters took the time to revisit the area of a recent large grass fire.
“Crews attended to the area of the large grass fire and extinguished visible hotspots,” the department continues.
