A Winnipeg man with a history of property crimes was arrested by Altona police during an early morning traffic stop on Saturday just outside of Plum Coulee.
According to police, officers pulled the man over for speeding and operating an unregistered vehicle. This led them to find open liquor, nearly 10 grams of meth along with break and enter tools in the vehicle. They also learned the license plates didn't match the vehicle.
Police add, the driver did not provide identification and verbally identified himself as someone else, which turned out to be false.
The 38-year-old was arrested and remanded into custody and charged with four Criminal Code offences and one offence under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act for possession of methamphetamine.
A foiled scheme
Altona police were able to successfully intervene in a recent grandparent scam attempt.
Last week, family members reached out to police saying their mom had withdrawn about $6,000 from her bank account. They went on to say that she was awaiting instructions on where to send the money, because police had her grandson in jail.
Officers spoke to the woman and assured her that her grandson was not, in fact, in jail and was fine. They then helped her re-deposit her money into her account.
It was determined the scammers most likely targeted the woman through her Facebook account, which police say had no privacy features enabled.
