Teams from Weyburn were in Regina over the weekend for the Saskatchewan Lacrosse Association provincial championships. The performances from the Weyburn teams would see four medals coming back to the Opportunity City.

In the U13 Division, the Weyburn Young’s Equipment Thrashers would win the gold medal, as they picked up a 6-3 win Monday morning over the Weyburn Security Thrashers. A strong opening period set the tone, with the Young’s Equipment Thrashers scoring three times, including a power play goal from Ben Cote, assisted by Jep Furgason. Paislee Besharah led the way offensively with a pair of goals, while Cohen Baumgartner also notched a two-goal performance, including the lone marker of the third period to help seal the win.

The Weyburn Security Thrashers stayed close early, answering twice in the first period with goals from Felix and Simon Wawro. However, they were held scoreless in the second frame and couldn't close the gap despite a third-period tally from Cody Wig, who was set up by Roman Quigley and Felix Wawro.

The Weyburn Security Thrashers would be awarded the silver medal.

It would be a silver medal for the U15 Weyburn Young Fellow Thrashers, as they fell 6-3 to the Swift Current Rampage in the championship game. Hudson Klimm led the Rampage with a hat trick, including two second-period goals that helped Swift Current pull ahead after a tightly contested opening frame. Greysen Waiser and Blake Simpson added goals of their own, while Jax Brown was a key playmaker with three assists.

Weyburn showed flashes of offence, answering in the first with a goal from Cruz Carter and later tallying twice in the second. Evrhet Schenher struck short-handed, and Nash Missal converted on a power play set up by Julie Labrecque, briefly closing the gap. However, Weyburn couldn’t stage a late rally.

In the U17 Division final, the Moose Jaw Mustangs held the Weyburn Panther Drilling Thrashers off to win 6-1, giving the Mustangs a gold medal and a silver for the Weyburn squad. Caiden Arnott led the Mustangs with two goals, including the game’s opener and a second-period tally, while Kashton Smith and Chase Folk also contributed key goals in the first frame to give Moose Jaw an early cushion. Nixson Friesen and Rhylan Hixson added third-period markers to round out the scoring.

Weyburn’s lone goal came in the third period when Emmett Gill broke the shutout at 11:48. The game became increasingly physical as it went on, culminating in a flurry of penalties and four game misconducts handed out late in the third. Several players were sent off for unnecessary roughness majors and stick infractions, but it did little to change the outcome.

The provincials wrapped up the box lacrosse season, but the lacrosse season isn’t quite over yet. The 2025 field lacrosse season will start up soon, with the Weyburn Lacrosse Association fielding teams across all age groups. The season is set to start in mid-August.
