It was a Canada Day to remember as the community came together in a vibrant display of cultures at this year’s Culture Fest, hosted in conjunction with July 1st celebrations near the Meridian Exhibition Centre at Parkland Stage in Winkler.
The afternoon event was spearheaded in part by Regional Connections, whose settlement workers and staff were on site showcasing their cultures alongside dozens of other booths, activities, and stage performances.
"It is really symbolic on Canada Day to get together and celebrate our heritage and who we are." — Tina Barkman, Regional Connections
Tina Barkman, Settlement Director with Regional Connections, reflected on the meaning of the day for those new to the area.
“I think when I see them, the joy on their face as they're introducing the different booths here at Culture Fest, being really proud of their own cultures, [and] being able to share with Canadian citizens… they're just so happy to be able to share of themselves and share with each other. And... just be one together.”
A partnership with the City of Winkler
Barkman also praised the partnership with the City of Winkler, noting their longstanding support for Culture Fest.
“The City of Winkler has been phenomenal. They've worked with us through all the years that we've had Culture Fest and we are grateful for their financial assistance and for their presence here. It's always that much more worthwhile when you can do something together as partners, and celebrate together.”
Support from the Mayor
Mayor Henry Siemens echoed the importance of this joint celebration, especially in a region built on immigration and diversity.
“As we celebrate Canada, we also get to celebrate... who makes up our Canada… They look for more opportunity for their family, they look for more security, more safety, just something more… And we as a community also become more based on their presence here.”

The grounds featured cultural performances on stage and hands-on activities at various booths. Siemens also noted the family-friendly atmosphere and practical setup on a warm summer day:
“It was also really good that on a very hot day like today that we have the children's activities inside the Meridian Exhibition Center… What more do we want when summer arrives and we get to have Canada Day and we get to celebrate? We want hot, we want sunny, we want all the things that we do have today and it's been a lot of fun.”
Canadian Citizenship Ceremony
A highlight of the day included a Canadian citizenship ceremony, with nearly 30 individuals receiving their official welcome on stage. Mayor Siemens, himself an immigrant, reflected on the powerful moment:
“It was a powerful piece to be able to [be a part of] … The opportunity that's now here [for the immigrants] ... The future is now in front of them.”
Siemens noted that the excitement in the air for new beginnings was a favourite part of this Canada Day celebration.
