Whether you're a seasoned angler or trying your luck for the first time, Saskatchewan’s Free Fishing Weekend is the perfect time to cast a line — no licence required.

On July 12 and 13, the Ministry of Environment is inviting residents and visitors alike to enjoy the province’s world-class sportfishing on any public waters open to fishing.

“Saskatchewan is renowned for its world-class sportfishing, and we encourage everyone to enjoy a truly remarkable experience,” Environment Minister Travis Keisig said in a statement. “Free Fishing Weekend is the ideal time to discover the province's incredible fishing opportunities and enjoy the outdoors.”

Now in its 36th year, Free Fishing Weekend was first introduced in 1989 as a way to increase public awareness of Saskatchewan’s angling experiences. A winter version of the event was added in 2015.

During the weekend, fishing licences are not required, but participants must follow all other applicable rules. This includes obeying possession limits, following seasonal restrictions, and understanding that fishing in national parks is not included in the free weekend. A licence is still required to transport fish out of the province.

With thousands of lakes, rivers, and streams teeming with northern pike, walleye, trout, perch and more, Saskatchewan offers one of Canada’s most diverse freshwater angling landscapes.

Anglers are encouraged to review the current Saskatchewan Anglers Guide, available wherever fishing licences are sold or online at saskatchewan.ca/fishing, for full regulations, safety tips, and conservation guidelines.

So whether you’re heading to a quiet lake, launching a boat, or teaching a child how to cast for the first time, Free Fishing Weekend is your opportunity to enjoy the water and explore one of Saskatchewan’s favourite pastimes — no strings (or licences) attached.
