An NHL draft pick wasn't the only exciting hockey news out of Macklin this week.

The Western Hockey League's Saskatoon Blades announced the addition of Macklin native Tye Scherger as the team's new assistant coach for the upcoming season. Coming over from a short, but very successful tenure with the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League's Melfort Mustangs, Scherger will work with fellow assistant Andrew Sarauer under Blades head coach Dan DaSilva

A few eyebrows were raised after the SJHL's Melfort Mustangs opened up a job posting for their assistant coach position to end June, but now Mustangs fans have to be ecstatic to see Scherger moving on to the major junior level.

Working under CJHL coach of the year Trevor Blevins since the 2023-24 season, Scherger and the Mustangs are coming off back-to-back Canterra Seeds Cup championships, finishing as the Centennial Cup runners-up each year as well.

“I’d like to thank Trevor Blevins and the Melfort Mustangs organization for giving me the opportunity to start my coaching career with them,” stated Scherger in the team release, “Unforgettable seasons winning back-to- back championships!"

Scherger then thanked the Blades organization for bringing him on board. He's passionate about the game, and his new team is hoping that will resonate with a young group.

"We’re excited to add a young, driven coach to our staff,” said the head coach DaSilva, “Tye’s someone who brings fresh energy, a strong work ethic, and a modern approach to player development. His passion for the game and commitment to continuous growth will be a great asset to our team culture.”

Scherger is a junior hockey alum having played in both the AJHL with Olds and SJHL with Melfort. After two years of hardware in a place he knows well, a short move to Saskatoon marks the next step in Scherger's hockey journey and a chance to replicate previous success.
