Chestermere is unveiling a draft for its Municipal Development Plan (MDP).

A public hearing is scheduled for Monday (July 14) at 6 p.m., allowing residents to share their thoughts on proposed changes to the nearly 10-year-old plan.

Several policies are being updated for 2025.

To better protect school land, the city plans to ban dirt piles on school sites, aiming to speed up the construction of new school buildings.

Chestermere also intends to prioritize commercial development, with the goal of increasing access to services and stores closer to residential areas. This is also an effort to ease residential taxes. The city is proposing to integrate light commercial and residential uses in underdeveloped areas near highways and at the city's outer edges.

New housing design guidelines are also in development, intending to foster more visually harmonious neighbourhoods. In addition, residential areas will be given defined titles and names so that area-specific policies can be created.

Updated land use maps will outline growth areas through 2050, providing a framework for planning future infrastructure and tracking the city's long-term development.

Improved transparency is another key priority in the updated MDP. The city is committing to sharing more frequent updates with its residents on planning initiatives and development projects.

Residents can submit feedback on the draft plan by email until Tuesday (July 8).

More information on the MDP is available on the City of Chestermere's website
