The Saskatchewan Ministry of Health has issued a public overdose alert after a tested drug sample in Saskatoon was found to contain several dangerous substances.
According to the alert, a sample tested at Prairie Harm Reduction contained para-fluorofentanyl, xylazine, and benzodiazepines — all of which pose a serious risk of overdose.
The drug, which is purple in colour and sold as fentanyl, was found to contain 5 to 10 per cent para-fluorofentanyl, 15 to 20 per cent caffeine, 70 to 75 per cent erythritol, and trace amounts of xylazine and benzodiazepines.
The ministry said the drug is typically smoked and carries a high risk of overdose and serious harm. While naloxone can reverse the effects of opioids like para-fluorofentanyl, it has no effect on xylazine or benzodiazepines.
The alert will remain in effect until July 9 at 11:59 p.m.
