GoFundMe/Remembering Lukah - Supporting the Mitchell Family
A fundraiser has been launched for an Okotoks family grieving the sudden loss of their seven-year-old daughter.
On July 2, Tanis Mitchell announced that her daughter, Lukah, had passed away unexpectedly over the weekend.
Lukah first captured the hearts of many in 2018, when, at just one year old, she underwent surgery to remove a tumour from her abdomen. Complications from the procedure led to multi-organ failure, requiring multiple organ transplants.
Her story quickly spread, and thousands followed the Mitchells’ journey, offering encouragement and support to Lukah and her family.
Lukah received her transplants in December 2018 and was discharged from hospital the following February.
“Six years ago, she was given hours to live. The world rallied and we were gifted the miracle of more time,” Tanis wrote in an Instagram post. “These years were never guaranteed, and she lived them so fully—with joy, softness, silliness, resilience and a love that touched everyone who knew her.”
A GoFundMe campaign organized by family friend Kacey Clark has raised over $20,000 in just a few days.
Funds raised will help with funeral costs, time away from work, and other expenses as the family takes time to grieve.
“Lukah was a thoughtful, imaginative, and creative little girl,” the fundraiser reads. “She loved music and dancing, and was always happiest when she was playing, pretending, and dreaming up something new. Her energy and spirit brought joy to her parents, Tanis and Kody, and her siblings, Berlynn and Cyprus."
According to an update on the fundraiser page, a celebration of Lukah’s life is planned for July 20.
