"Steve passed away in Winnipeg, Manitoba on July 1, 2025, at the age of 65, following complications related to Parkinsonism and Dementia.
Steve is survived by his wife Lois; daughter Alyssa (Fabian Zeder); brother Clare (Barb); sister Judi (John Fotherby); and many beloved extended family members and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Menno and Helen Braun.
Steve was born in Altona, Manitoba on May 22, 1960, to Menno and Helen Braun. He was the eldest of three siblings and spent his childhood in Altona, swimming at the local pool, biking around town, and attending Altona Bergthaler Church.
After high school, Steve moved to Winnipeg, where he lived for the remainder of his life. He spent a year in Hutchinson, Kansas through Mennonite Central Committee’s voluntary service program, and remained committed to service throughout his life through Bethel Mennonite Church. Over the years, he volunteered as a youth leader, a prison chaplain assistant, usher, Kids Club helper, on the MVS support committee, with Winnipeg Harvest, and as a hospital visitor.
Steve held a variety of jobs over the years — including Holiday Inn, Penner Foods, and running his own coffee truck, “Let’s Eat with Steve.” He found his calling later in life working as a health care aide at Grace Hospital, where he served patients with care, compassion, and warm blankets for more than 15 years.
In 1992, Steve married Lois Heinrichs. Their marriage of 32 years was marked by laughter, shared faith, and love. Together they raised their daughter Alyssa.
Steve enjoyed fishing, swimming, camping at Stephenfield Provincial Park, backyard gardening, long walks through River Heights, friendly chats with neighbours on the front lawn swing, and video calling with Alyssa and Fabian. Thank you to the staff at Concordia Hospital for the excellent care.
Steve is loved by many and will be missed.
A funeral will be held at Sargent Avenue Mennonite Church at 11:00 a.m. on July 10th, 2025."
