The Airdrie Fire Department has completed its annual fire hydrant testing for the year.
Deputy Chief with the Airdrie Fire Department, Garth Rabel, explained they do this testing starting in the fall in collaboration with the City of Airdrie's water services team.
"We make sure that the water supply, which we will need if we need to go to work in that area, is functioning properly, effectively and efficiently."
He shared that they checked around 700-800 fire hydrants.
"We're growing as a city, and that puts more hydrants into our inventory. When the crews go out, it's very effective for firefighters, because they get to know these new areas of their established areas."
Rabel also explained that while they do this testing, it is a great time to meet and answer questions Airdronians might have.
"We get all these neat questions that are asked by the public, and of course, all of our members are ready and willing and able to provide those responses."
He also wanted to remind residents about parking in front of fire hydrants and keeping the space around them free and clear.
"When we need it, we're going to need it quickly, and we're going to have to ensure that we can gain access to it, get it flowing, and then we can get to get on with our work."
Rabel wanted to thank the water services team for their continued collaboration with the Airdrie Fire Department and for being on call for them 24/7 whenever they need it.
"They can bump the water supply or the pressure (to certain fire hydrants) to allow us for large fire operations, when our ladders go up and we need copious amounts of water, then water services provides us with that."
He concluded by saying if you happen to see a fire hydrant that has been damaged or does not look right, please contact water services or the fire department.
