Science paves the way to new technology and advancements designed to help put more money in producer pockets.
Some of that work is happening right here at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's Swift Current Research and Development Centre.
Associate Director Samia Berraies says she was surprised at the number of people that are not aware of the important work and research that is happening right here.
In an effort to change that, the SCRDC is opening the doors to farmers, ranchers, and the general public to come in and get a better idea of the research being done at the site and the potential job opportunities.
She says the work being done here is dedicated to sustainable agriculture and the prairies.
"Our scientists work on several fields of research and areas of research, including cereal crops and improving cropping systems for agronomy, for example, and also work towards tackling environmental challenges like climate change and soil health."
She says the objective here is just to showcase the practicality of the science.
"How we translate the science, the ideas, and the projects into something that a farmer, a consumer, and our community can benefit from. We're going to show all the areas of research, from cereal breeding, labs, and greenhouses to quality farming practices. We also have livestock and a nutrition program for cattle; that's a big one for kids—they love their livestock."
The Swift Current Research and Development Centre open house runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 10th.
