Wakamow Valley will host a free fishing clinic at the Plaxton’s Lake boardwalk this Saturday, July 12, offering beginners a chance to learn essential skills during Saskatchewan Free Fishing Week.

The event is from 10 a.m. to noon and is presented in partnership with the South Saskatchewan Wildlife Association, with highly experienced anglers on hand to teach casting, tying lures, and other basic techniques.

“It’s open to all ages and all skill levels, but it’s really geared toward beginners who want to learn how to get started properly,” said Donna MacQuarrie-Bye, general manager of the Wakamow Valley Authority.

Fishing has become noticeably more popular at Wakamow in recent years, especially along the boardwalk at Plaxton’s Lake.

“You see way more people fishing now than you did even a couple of years ago,” MacQuarrie-Bye said.

The clinic is meant to help newcomers build confidence — but also to encourage respect for the environment. MacQuarrie-Bye emphasized that the event includes a strong message about responsible angling habits, particularly proper disposal of fishing line and other gear.

“There’s been too much discarded line left in the park, and it’s dangerous — birds and animals can get tangled,” she said. “If people are going to enjoy this space and this activity, they need to fish with care.”

Following the instructional session, participants are invited to stay for a hot dog BBQ on the boardwalk. Basic rods and lures will be provided, but anyone interested is also welcome to bring their own equipment and questions for the instructors.

MacQuarrie-Bye, a self-described “fair weather fisher,” admits she hasn’t yet landed a fish despite a decade of trying — but that’s part of the charm.

“It’s a great way to spend an afternoon outside, even if you don’t catch anything,” she laughed.
