Gas prices have jumped up once again in Airdrie, when summer travel is at an all-time high.

Over the past couple of days, Airdronians saw gas prices jump from $125.9 to the $133.9 range while diesel jumped to $141.9

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, discussed why Airdrie is experiencing another surge.

"Oil prices are back up about $3 a barrel compared to a week ago. Oil is now at about $68 or $69 a barrel, and the slight increase in the price of oil is having an impact and pushing gas prices up."

When asked why Airdrie prices are higher than others, De Haan explained that competition pricing is a relevant factor.

"Calgary tends to see more competition among stations. Sometimes, some of the smaller communities may lag behind the pricing behaviours or have slightly higher prices simply because they may be further away. There may be less competition as well."

Traditionally, during the summer, gas prices trend downwards, but, according to De Haan, a lot of geopolitical shifts have prevented that from happening.

"As the Trump administration has taken over, they've kind of rewritten the book on trading. There's been a lot of talk of new tariffs in the States, so that's something to keep an eye on, as well as Middle East tensions, that has stoked oil price volatility this summer."

When asked about what direction we could see gas prices go in the future, he said he still expects some pressure.

"As we get into August, I don't expect a whole lot of relief, but I do think we'll start to see more relief at the pump as we get into September, October, into the fall, that's usually when demand for gasoline falls off."

Gas prices in Calgary are around the $124.9 range, while Edmonton is around the $115.9 range.
