Almost every day this summer, Buffalo Pound Provincial Park has programming planned for visitors.

The park offers a combination of events hosted by park interpreters as well as opportunities to explore and enjoy nature independently.

“Buffalo Pound is a busy park. It’s a great blend of nature and recreation. We have excellent fishing, canoeing, a heated outdoor pool, hiking and biking trails, as well as two disc golf courses,” said Shawna Smuk, southwest regional manager for the Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport.

Plenty of activities are also taking place at the visitor centre, including dining at the Trailhead Cafe.

“We’re excited to have them there from Thursday to Sunday. People can check out the new interpretive programming, get free access to Wi-Fi, and then have a quick lunch,” Smuk said.

This weekend alone, the park has several activities planned:

At 4 p.m. on Friday, park interpreters will guide visitors in building bat houses to be placed within the park to increase bat habitat.

On Friday night at 9 p.m., “Night Caching: Evening Espionage” will take participants through the park searching for hidden markers using flashlights in the dark.

A geocaching gnome hunt takes place Saturday at 4 p.m., where visitors will learn to use GPS devices to track down gnomes in the park.

Saturday evening at 7 p.m., “Evening Embers” invites guests to gather around a campfire to sing songs and roast marshmallows.

Sunday features the Craft Club’s “Fantastic Plants” at 11 a.m., followed by a teddy bear picnic at 2 p.m.

Smuk also noted that July 19 is National Parks Day, with free admission and special crafts and celebrations throughout the day.

A full list of activities at Buffalo Pound Provincial Park can be found on the Saskatchewan Parks website. All events are free with park admission.
