The Town of Assiniboia is looking to fill the bellies of its residents while raising money for recreational activities in the community.
This past Tuesday, the Better Together Barbeque series kicked off at the Assiniboia Aquatic Centre. All ages are welcome to join every Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. For just $5, attendees can enjoy a burger or hot dog, chips, and a drink.
This initiative offers an extremely affordable way to feed families, co-workers, staff, neighbors, or friends while keeping recreation affordable in Assiniboia.
"The money goes back to programming events like Canada Day, outdoor movie in the park, party at the pool, free skating, free shinny, and free walking track. So all that money just helps to offset those programming costs," said Stephanie VanDeSype, Recreation & Community Wellness Manager with the Town of Assiniboia.
This year, the community is challenging everyone to invite one or two people to join each week. Last year, it took the entire summer to get to 400 attendees at a single barbecue. Early on this summer, that changed.
"The support on the first day blew us away. We had 411 people and have never started the year this strongly, so we are very excited for this summer," stated VanDeSype.
The barbecues will be held at the same location every Tuesday, with the last one scheduled for August 26, as a different sponsor will be supporting each day.
"It's such a great day every Tuesday, come and enjoy the barbecue, it's all about being together, enjoying friendship, meeting new people, and my god, you can't eat for less than five bucks anywhere these days, so it's a great bargain."
