Local RCMP responded to 283 calls for service between June 30 and July 6, with files ranging from traffic offences to theft, assaults, and weapons charges.
The calls come from across the Central Plains area, including Portage, Treherne, Amaranth and nearby rural municipalities.
Traffic and provincial offences top the list
Police delt with 68 traffic offences under the Highway Traffic Act during the week, as well as seven vehicle collisions and one impaired driver.
In addition, 35 investigations fall under provincial statutes such as the Mental Health Act, Child Welfare Act, and Coroner’s Act.
Weapons charges laid June 30
One of the most serious incidents took place on June 30. Just before noon, an RCMP officer on patrol spots several people under the Tupper Street bridge near Fisher Avenue, a location police say is often linked to drug activity.
“A 25-year-old male from Dakota Plains First Nation was found to have an outstanding Arrest Warrant and was taken into custody,” notes Cst. Larry Neufeld, Media Liaison Officer with the Portage detachment.
“During the search of the suspect, a weapon was located,” adds Neufeld.
The man faces charges of Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose and Carrying a Concealed Weapon. He was remanded and appeared in court July 2.
Neufeld continues, “A second male who was severely intoxicated was placed under arrest and held to sober up and released with no charges.”
July 6 theft results in arrest
Another notable incident took place on July 6 just after noon. Officers responded to a theft call at a business on Saskatchewan Avenue East and were quickly alerted to another theft happening at the same location.
“The suspect was pointed out by employees and the 59-year-old male from Portage la Prairie was placed under arrest for theft,” remarks Neufeld.
He was charged with Theft Under $5,000 and released with a court date to come.
Crimes against persons and property reported
Throughout the week, RCMP also investigated 12 assaults, five assaults with a weapon, and five reports of uttering threats. In terms of property crime, police log 19 thefts, two break and enters, one stolen vehicle, and 18 mischief cases.
An additional 48 criminal investigations and 62 general assistance calls, such as suspicious activity and false alarms, were also reported.
