“Black and grizzly bears are feeding on berries right now,” the agency said in a July 6 bulletin. “It is easy to surprise a bear that is focused on feeding.”

Hikers and backcountry users are urged to take precautions, including:

  • Making noise on trails

  • Travelling in tight groups

  • Avoiding earbuds

  • Carrying accessible bear spray and knowing how to use it

  • Slowing down — especially if trail running or cycling

  • Watching for fresh signs like scat, particularly near berry patches

“If you see a bear, stay calm, back away slowly and leave the area. Never run,” Parks Canada stated.

Any bear sightings should be reported immediately to Banff Dispatch at 403-762-1470.
