Parks Canada is warning visitors to Banff National Park that berry season is now underway — and with it comes increased bear activity near trails, roads and campgrounds.
“Black and grizzly bears are feeding on berries right now,” the agency said in a July 6 bulletin. “It is easy to surprise a bear that is focused on feeding.”
Hikers and backcountry users are urged to take precautions, including:
-
Making noise on trails
-
Travelling in tight groups
-
Avoiding earbuds
-
Carrying accessible bear spray and knowing how to use it
-
Slowing down — especially if trail running or cycling
-
Watching for fresh signs like scat, particularly near berry patches
“If you see a bear, stay calm, back away slowly and leave the area. Never run,” Parks Canada stated.
Any bear sightings should be reported immediately to Banff Dispatch at 403-762-1470.
