Albertans are the least likely in Canada to vacation within their own province this year, according to a national survey released by Go RVing Canada.

Just 55 per cent of Albertans plan to travel within Alberta, the lowest staycation rate in the country. Forty-three per cent are looking beyond provincial borders, with British Columbia (34 per cent) and Ontario (23 per cent) topping their Canadian travel wish lists.

Go RVing Canada – a non-profit that represents the RVing industry in Canada – released the results of a new national survey on July 10. The findings show that while almost eight in 10 Canadians say they’re interested in exploring more of Canada, 43 per cent haven’t ever ventured beyond their home province.

For those who haven’t explored the country, 42 per cent said they don’t know where to go, while 64 per cent said they haven’t gotten around to planning a trip. Nearly 65 per cent of Canadians planning a vacation this year said they intend to travel within Canada.

“It’s inspiring to see so much patriotism among Canadians this year, especially when it comes to supporting domestic travel and local businesses,” said Chris Mahony, President of Go RVing Canada. “But it’s surprising how many of us haven’t truly experienced all that Canada has to offer. We’re challenging Canadians to turn that patriotic spirit into action this year—get out there, hit the road, and explore this incredible country for yourself.”

Among Canadians with domestic travel plans in 2025:

  • Ontario is the most sought-after province, with more than one-third of Canadian travellers planning to visit.

  • Quebec follows, with over one in four planning to explore “La Belle Province.”

  • British Columbia is attracting a quarter of domestic travellers.

The release said Quebeckers are the most likely to stay within their home province. Seventy-eight per cent plan to vacation in Quebec. For those venturing out, Ontario (18 per cent) and New Brunswick (13 per cent) were the top destinations.

About 70 per cent of residents in both British Columbia and Ontario who are planning a Canadian vacation said they would stay within their province. Of those planning to travel farther, about 20 per cent in each province said they are opting for a cross-country trip — with B.C. residents eyeing Ontario, and vice versa.

The survey also found that 64 per cent of Canadians are looking to take a break from screens and the news cycle this year, while seven out of 10 said they would love to spend more time with family. Seventy-five per cent of respondents said spending time outdoors makes them happier and that they want to be outside more this summer.

The top three “favourite” types of trips, according to Canadians, were affordable vacations, unique experiences, and road trips.

The release cited the 2023 RVDA Economic Impact Study by The Portage Group Inc., which found that 2.1 million Canadian households own an RV.

RVing is also on the radar for many Canadians:

  • 25 per cent have been RVing

  • 44 per cent haven’t yet, but are interested in going

  • More than one-third said they’re likely to take an RV trip within the next year
