Scenes for a new rodeo drama called Cowboy were filmed at the Airdrie Pro Rodeo grounds on June 30, during a production that wrapped in Alberta earlier this month.
According to a social media post from that day, Airdrie residents were invited to appear as extras in the stands while cameras captured live rodeo action. Filming also took place at the Ponoka Stampede.
According to previous reporting by DiscoverAirdrie, ACTRA Alberta stated that production in the province began on June 21 and wrapped July 2.
According to Variety, Cowboy is directed by Cameron Duddy, known for his work with the Grammy-nominated country band Midland and for directing music videos for artists such as Bruno Mars and John Mayer. The film was written by Adair Cole, based on a story by Duddy and Midland bandmate Jess Carson.
The cast includes Ben Foster (Hell or High Water), Rudy Pankow (Outer Banks), Gabriel Basso (The Night Agent), and PBR world champion JB Mauney. Midland’s Mark Wystrach also appears in an acting role.
Variety reports that the film follows a group of entertainers navigating the rodeo circuit while contending with the personal and physical toll of their careers.
Producers include Lucas Smith (Endgame), Matt Graham, William Lowery, and Ian Bryce (Ian Bryce Productions). Executive producers include Ben Foster, David Keinath and Jordan Yospe (DFA Entertainment), Shawn Williamson (Brightlight Productions), James D. Stern (Endgame), and Sydney Allen (Paint Horse Pictures). The project is co-represented by UTA Independent Film Group and Range Select.
