A bear warning is in effect for a trail in Kananaskis Country after a grizzly bluff charged a hiker. Alberta Parks issued the warning on July 8 for the Bill Milne Trail between Wedge Pond and Mt. Allan Drive.

The warning applies to the Bill Milne Trail, Evan-Thomas PRA, Wedge Pond Day Use, and Mt. Allan Drive. Officials say the warning will remain in place until further notice.

Although the incident occurred in a specific section of the trail, Alberta Parks reminds visitors that bears can be encountered anywhere in the Kananaskis Region at any time.

To reduce the risk of a bear encounter, park users are urged to:

  • Keep all attractants secured, including food, garbage, recycling, and pet food

  • Never leave scented items unattended

  • Make plenty of noise and travel in groups

  • Stay aware of your surroundings and watch for bear signs

  • Keep pets leashed

  • Carry bear spray, keep it accessible, and know how to use it

Bear sightings should be reported immediately to 403-591-7755.
