Update:
The severe thunderstorm watch has now ended.
Original Story:
Environment Canada had issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Portage la Prairie and several surrounding communities as weather conditions became increasingly favourable for potentially dangerous storms Thursday evening.
The watch, issued Thursday afternoon, included areas across the Central Plains and Interlake regions, such as Lundar, Elie, St. Ambroise, Carman, and Rosser. A cold front is expected to push through southern Manitoba, triggering severe thunderstorm development late in the day.
According to the alert, the storms could bring strong wind gusts, large hail, and heavy rainfall, all of which pose risks to public safety and property.
“Severe thunderstorms can cause significant damage,” the advisory warns. “Strong wind gusts may knock down trees and power lines, large hail can damage vehicles and crops, and heavy rain can lead to flash flooding and reduced visibility.”
Residents were urged to take precautions and keep an eye on changing conditions, and Environment Canada reminds everyone that lightning remains a serious threat.
As the system moves eastward into Ontario later this evening, local emergency services and weather officials are encouraging the public to stay informed and act quickly if conditions worsen.
