Helping others is an integral part of life in the Prairies, and the people of Moose Jaw have once again demonstrated their commitment to supporting lifesaving endeavors, as the Canadian Blood Services’ clinic that is coming up Tuesday, July 22 is fully booked.
While appointment slots are currently full, Aaron Barlow, Community Development Manager for Canadian Blood Services in Saskatchewan encourages those who wish to donate to keep checking in.
“Right now, the event that is happening on the 22nd is 100 per cent booked, which doesn't mean that there aren't any appointments available,” said Barlow.
“I would just encourage people if they're looking to donate to visit blood.ca, call the 1-888-236-6283 number or download the GiveBlood app to find out if there are any open appointments.”
Barlow praised the people of Moose Jaw for their dedication to donating.
“Moose Jaw is a tremendous, tremendous supporter of Canadian blood services. We have not only residents of Moose Jaw, but people from surrounding communities also looking to book those appointments,” said Barlow.
“Again, just a huge thank you to the Moose Jaw community for the continued support of Canadian Blood Services.”
There will be plenty of opportunities to donate blood coming up, as blood donation events return to Moose Jaw frequently. In addition to the July clinic, others are scheduled for September, November, December, and February 2026.
Barlow noted that the need for blood is constant and, on the rise, with Canadian Blood Services running a national campaign to recruit an additional 1 million new donors over the next five years to meet the needs of patients and hospitals nationwide.
“Every moment, every day. There's a patient who requires blood or blood products as they are undergoing a number of treatments, be it cancer or leukemia, or routine surgeries. Blood is used every single day,” said Barlow.
“It's one of the most direct ways you can make a contribution to your community.”
Anyone over the age of 17 and is in good health is eligible to donate. However, Barlow does recommend those that are interested in donating blood check eligibility details online or call the helpline before doing so.
“There's a pretty staggering statistic of how many people are eligible to donate, yet how many do so. Only about 2% of eligible people are currently donating,” said Barlow.
“The number show that one in two people are eligible to donate.”
