While most crops are progressing nicely around West Central Saskatchewan, it's forage that's been behind the eight ball so far this year in terms of quality and progress.

West Central still has the most haying left with 72 per cent of the first crop still standing according to the July 1-7 crop report. Of the 18 per cent that is cut, only 10 per cent has been baled or silaged. Its quality is relatively average in comparison to the rest of the province with ratings of six per cent excellent, 56 per cent good, 30 per cent fair, and eight per cent poor.

Thankfully the rest of the province's operations are moving along nicely with only about 50 per cent of the provinces first cut still standing. 28 per cent of fields have been cut, 22 per cent being baled and silaged already. Provincial quality is reading 11 per cent excellent, 48 per cent good, 30 per cent fair, and 11 per cent poor.

Nobody has begun the process of a second cut, but with some areas more advanced that others it's a possibility.

The nearby southwest is the furthest ahead in the province with only 21 per cent of the first cut still standing, behind them is the southeast at 54 per cent. then the northeast at 56, East-Central region at 65 per cent, and then finally just behind West Central is the northwest where 67 per cent of hay crops are yet to be cut.

It was also shared in this week's crop report that pastureland is ranging from good to poor condition in different spots. Only one per cent of pastureland around the province is in excellent condition, while 24 per cent are good, 37 per cent are fair, 29 per cent are poor, and nine per cent are in very poor condition according to the Ministry of Agriculture update.
