With summer in full swing, RCMP are reminding people to take extra precautions to protect their vehicles and belongings while enjoying outdoor activities.

Police say thefts of, and from, vehicles often increase during the warmer months when more people are visiting campsites, trailheads and recreational areas.

Drivers are urged to always lock their vehicles, even when stepping away briefly. Authorities also advise against leaving a vehicle running while unattended, warning that opportunistic thieves can strike in the short time it takes to run an errand.

Motorists should avoid leaving keys, garage door openers or documents with personal information inside their vehicles. Valuables should be hidden or locked up, and recreational items such as off-highway vehicles, bicycles and kayaks should be secured.

Police also remind residents to fully close vehicle windows when away and to consider using window covers to hide items inside. A hitch lock can help prevent trailers from being stolen, and motion sensor lights around recreational vehicles can deter thieves.

The RCMP encourage everyone to practice good auto-theft prevention, so summer trips aren’t disrupted by crime.
