Environment Canada issued a heat warning this morning (July 12) at 4:20 a.m. for Vulcan County, parts of Foothills County, and Siksika Nation.
Hot temperatures with afternoon highs into the low 30s are expected to begin today, with overnight lows near 15°C.
The heat will continue into Sunday, with cooler temperatures forecasted for Monday.
The following areas are under the heat warning:
- Foothills Co. near Blackie
- Siksika Res. 146
- Vulcan Co. near Arrowwood Herronton and Queenstown
- Vulcan Co. near Vulcan and Ensign
- Vulcan Co. near Carmangay and Champion
- Vulcan Co. near Lomond Travers and Little Bow Reservoirs
- Vulcan Co. near Milo
Residents of and visitors to the warned regions are advised to take precautions to protect themselves, their families, and their neighbours:
- Consider rescheduling outdoor activities to cooler hours of the day
- Take frequent breaks from the heat, spending time in cooled indoor spaces where possible
- Drink plenty of water and other non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages to stay hydrated
- Check for your children or pets before you exit your vehicle. Do not leave any person or pet inside a closed vehicle for any length of time
During the heat wave, individuals are encouraged to monitor for symptoms of heat stroke or heat exhaustion, such as high body temperature, lack of sweat, confusion, fainting, and unconsciousness.
Children, seniors, and those with pre-existing conditions can experience earlier or more severe effects from heat.
