An emergency situation at the Eston Lions-Brummund Assoicates Swimming Pool last Wednesday prompted response from not only local EMS, RCMP, and volunteer first responders, but also STARS who arrived on scene with three members and worked closely with others to set up a local landing zone.

Two days after the incident occurred, the Town of Eston shared more information through a press release posted to social media.

In the Town statement, they described it as a "critical incident", and that, "thanks to the swift, skilled, and courageous response of the lifeguards on duty, the individual involved was rescued from the water and stabilized until EMS arrived."

Coordinating with STARS, the local Eston and District Fire Department shared through a press release of their own that the air ambulance was dispatched at 4:11 PM on July 9. Three members joined the emergency crews on scene at the pool while all other members responded to the Eston airport to set up a landing zone.

STARS made their landing at 5:02 PM and were clear of the airport by 5:23, and all units and members were clear of the scene and back in service by 5:48 on Wednesday.

Dealing with the emergency in just under two hours, the local fire department wanted to make sure they commended the lifeguards who took control of the situation first.

"We would like to extend a massive shout-out to the incredible lifeguards who saved a life. Your quick thinking, calm under pressure, and life-saving skills turned a terrifying moment into a story of survival. You don’t wear capes, but you are 100% heroes," they shared on Facebook. "To all lifeguards out there: thank you for showing up, staying sharp, and literally keeping us alive. We see you. We appreciate you. We owe you more than words can say."

The Town also gave a shoutout to the town lifeguard staff.

"The lifeguards' professionalism, composure, and training were nothing short of extraordinary. Despite their young age, they demonstrated the utmost focus and ability under pressure, initiating lifesaving interventions and working as a coordinated team in a high stress moment. Their actions directly contributed to a successful outcome and are a powerful example of what community care and preparedness can achieve. We are immensely proud of them."

A witness at the scene also jumped in to help, the release stated.

"We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to the bystander who stepped in to assist during the emergency. Their willingness to help in a critical moment is a reminder of the strength and compassion that exists within our community."

The Town of Eston was able to relay that the individual remained in hospital, and that thoughts would be with them through recovery, as reactions such as the ones below continue to come through along with comments on Facebook.

It's an incredibly tough situation for anyone to deal with, and that's why the Town relayed different ways for people to feel supported.

"If you or someone you know is experiencing distress or concern related to this event, we would like to remind you that support is available. The West Central Crisis and Family Support Centre - Traumatic Events Response Team and other local trusted providers offer confidential emotional support, and we encourage anyone affected to reach out."

In the wake of this incident the Town wants to reassure residents who may have witnessed it, or who are just disturbed by the news that the pool remains a safe and well-supervised facility.  Lifeguards undergo high levels of training, and Wednesday's response was a "testament to the success and necessity of that performance" according to the Town.

"Together, we thank and celebrate out young lifeguards for their extraordinary response and service to the safety of our community."

The Town of Eston release was put together in conjunction with the West Central Crisis and Family Support Centre.
