The Saskatchewan Roughriders put up a stinker on Saturday, losing 24-10 to the Calgary Stampeders for their first loss of the season.
Originally scheduled for Friday Night Football, after a long wait for everyone involved the Week 6 opener was moved to Saturday after smoky conditions forced the game to be delayed. The league did their best to play with the latest attempts at kicking the game off going through 11:00 PM Friday, to no avail.
When the game did kickoff on Saturday afternoon, it was all Calgary. A first play interception for the Riders provided false hope as Saskatchewan scored a field goal off the turnover, but after that it was all Stampeders as Vernon Adams Jr. cooked up two touchdowns and nearly 300 first half passing yards towards his game line of 428 yards passing total to go along with another touchdown pass and interception.
The offense only put up ten points on the night, but the passing game was still clicking for the Roughriders as Trevor Harris did his best to will the Riders back into the game with 425 yards and one touchdown on 36/44 passing in his return from injury. Unfortunately, it was a one-sided offensive attack as Saskatchewan only mustered 16 total rushing yards on nine attempts.
The loss moved the Roughriders record to 4-1 and dropped them out of top spot in the West Division, in favour of the Stampeders who are now also 4-1 with a tiebreaker. Behind them in the division are Winnipeg who remained at 3-1 with a bye, and BC also at three wins, coming off a convincing 32-14 win against 1-4 Edmonton on Sunday.
Over in the East Division, Hamilton beat Ottawa 23-20 on Saturday to move into a first-place tie with Montreal at 3-2. The Redblacks loss dropped their record to 1-5, tying them for third in the division points wise with the 1-4 Toronto Argonauts.
Week 7 of the CFL season starts on Thursday with Montreal hosting Toronto and then continues Friday with Calgary in Winnipeg looking to stay hot. On Saturday the weekend starts with Saskatchewan visiting BC for a 5:00 PM kickoff, and then the week ends on Sunday with a rematch between Hamilton and Ottawa from the nation's capital.
