Steinbach's population is about to grow temporarily, as a local non-profit prepares to host an international conference.

Isi Masi, with Island Breeze, says at least 60 visitors from Australia, New England, South Africa, Hawaii, Philippines, United States, Fiji, and Samoa will be arriving in the city for the Youth With A Mission (YWAM) event.

"We're excited about that. We also have other friends... from Nunavut, from BC, from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario that are also planning to come," he says, noting some have been impacted by or a part of the YWAM ministry.

"They're excited to come and also meet their international family," Masi says.

It's the first time Canada has hosted the conference, he says, adding it runs every two years.

"We are very honoured and privileged to showcase our community to them."

A packed schedule

While Masi is feeling a variety of emotions leading up to the conference's start on Sunday, he says he's truly looking forward to it.

The week promises to be full of meaningful experiences—both for conference attendees and the local community.

"On Tuesday, we'll be heading out to one of the reservations by Brokenhead, so it will be great to bring our international families to see that component of what we do," Masi says.

Then, on Thursday, he says the group will host a concert in Winnipeg, featuring Canada awakening—a dance group—as well as B'nai Brith.

The concert is free to attend, though registration is required, Masi notes.

Community support needed

Masi expresses gratitude to the Steinbach community for its ongoing support—including through donations raised via the KPMG Taste of Summer Charity Barbecue.

However, three to five host homes are still needed to support the influx of families and couples.

"We're thankful we're partnering with Steinbach Bible College to book their dorms for a lot of our single people that are coming. But we're just putting the word out there for any people that want to billet," he says.

In addition, food donations for the week-long event would be greatly appreciated.

Those interested in billeting guests or donating food can reach out by calling 204-371-7542 or 204-371-1765, or by emailing islandbreezemb@gmail.com.

"We would be very thankful and appreciative," Masi says.
