E-scooter hospitalizations on the rise; adult men most often injured

As the popularity of e-scooters continues to rise, so too does the number of injuries. 

That is according to Diana Craiovan, Program Lead for Hospital Data Advancement and Engagement with Canadian Institute for Health Information. The Institute recently released a report on the leading causes of injury-related hospitalizations and emergency department visits in Canada. Craiovan says the report shows a 32 per cent increase in e-scooter injuries from 2022/23 to 2023/24.

Southern Manitobans invited to join national nature challenge

Whether a biologist, bird-lover, or someone who just wants to get outside, a national contest is inviting Canadians to connect with nature—right from their own backyards.

The Nature Conservancy of Canada's (NCC) Big Backyard BioBlitz has returned for its fifth year and is asking southern Manitobans to photograph different plants and animals and share their findings online.

Participants can do so via the iNaturalist app, which not only works for uploading pictures and audio recordings of birds and plants, but for "downloading" new information to curious minds.

Manitoba Parks shares safety tips as campsites fill-up for August long

As southeastern Manitobans gear up for the August long weekend, free provincial park entry and full campsites signal a busy few days ahead for nature lovers.

"People should get outside and enjoy our summers. They're short, so it's important to go explore and enjoy the great outdoors while we have the opportunity," says Elisabeth Ostrop, manager of recreation and education services with Manitoba Parks.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) brought its touring debt clock around the province, aiming to raise awareness about Manitoba’s growing provincial debt.

According to the CTF, the province’s debt has surpassed $35 billion and continues to increase.

"It's going up about $4,000 a minute, or $5.5 million a day," says Gage Haubrich, prairie director for the federation.

Dominion City firefighter assists with Snow Lake wildfire protection

A local volunteer firefighter is doing his part to support those on the front lines of Manitoba’s wildfire response.  

The town of Snow Lake was evacuated on July 10 due to the threat of wildfires. Just two days later, on July 12, volunteer firefighter Steve Slaney from Dominion City joined crews to assist with wildfire protection. They returned one week later, on July 19. 

Island Breeze set to welcome global guests for international conference

Steinbach's population is about to grow temporarily, as a local non-profit prepares to host an international conference.

Isi Masi, with Island Breeze, says at least 60 visitors from Australia, New England, South Africa, Hawaii, Philippines, United States, Fiji, and Samoa will be arriving in the city for the Youth With A Mission (YWAM) event.

"We're excited about that. We also have other friends... from Nunavut, from BC, from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario that are also planning to come," he says, noting some have been impacted by or a part of the YWAM ministry.
