Rhineland Council has taken a deeper look at ongoing frost boil issues on a number of rural roads in the municipality. This comes on the heels of having to repair significant frost boils that developed this Spring on portions of Road 9 West. In the short term, the frost boils were filled with shale. However, Council was keenly interested in doing something to prevent the reoccurrence of these frost boils.
"We took a look at the issue, and they are a severe road hazard and we would like, particularly on priority grain roads and also the Ag Parks, to remediate those frost boil situations," explained Reeve Don Wiebe for Reeve on the Radio.
How will work be funded?
The work could be quite expensive, so council initially looked at using some of the money from its Federal Priority Grain Roads grant.
"To change the scope of the project is very time-consuming, and there are also some contractual arrangements which were quite awkward to defer, so Council decided let's look at this next year," Wiebe said who admitted it could be quite an expensive proposition.
"Council will have to consider either special debentures, and/or or surplus funds, to address this problem, so that's on next year's agenda," he concluded.
