A photo radar scam has been making the rounds in Southern Alberta.

On July 11, both the Lethbridge Police Service and the Medicine Hat Police Service took to Facebook to warn the public about a phishing scam.

Then, on Wednesday, July 16, the Taber Police took to Facebook to let the public know they are now also receiving reports of this same scam.

As part of this scam, people are receiving a text message from "Alberta Drive Safe" or "Safe Roads Alberta" or "City of Lethbridge", claiming the recipient of the message has an unpaid photo radar ticket.

In the message, the person is directed to click a provided link to pay the ticket.

According to the police, if you receive this text, do not click on the link and simply delete the text instead.

Both the Medicine Hat Police and the Lethbridge Police confirm that photo radar tickets are not sent out as texts, but are mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle, and payments for photo radar tickets are dealt with by the Alberta Courts and Alberta Registries.

If a ticket is not paid, the fine will be levied against the registration of the vehicle.

In order to help protect yourself from these scams, delete any unsolicited text message or email, and if it has a link, do not click on it.

If you believe you may have an unpaid ticket, contact the local police or registration centre to confirm, and do not provide money or personal information to these kinds of messages.

Anyone who believes they may have fallen victim to this or any other scam, contact your local police
