The Estevan Community Wellness Committee is inviting residents to join a newly formed Community Building Team focused on expanding and enhancing community activities across the city.

The Wellness Committee has long worked to improve the health, well-being, and connectedness of Estevan’s residents through initiatives like the Courage and Community Dinner, board game nights, and a block party kit program. Recognizing the need for a dedicated group to help plan and grow such efforts, the committee recently created the Community Building Team.

Co-chair Shelly Veroba explained the team’s purpose is to build stronger links between existing community organizations and support the development of new activities.

“We wanted a dedicated subcommittee just focused on building events like board game night and the Courage and Community dinner,” Veroba said. “Our main committee members have other volunteer commitments, so this allows us to focus on planning and growing our initiatives.”

Since launching in winter 2023, the team has successfully established a monthly board game night that rotates between different locations, including schools and community spaces. The next game night is scheduled for August 19 at 6 p.m. at the Southeast Tech Hub.

“We’ve moved the start time earlier to 6 p.m. because families told us it’s easier to get kids out and home in time for bed, especially during the summer,

Volunteers of all backgrounds, skills, and time commitments are encouraged to join. “Some people can dedicate an hour a month, others more,” Veroba said. “Whatever your availability or skill set, we welcome everyone who wants to help.”

A key role for the Community Building Team will also be assisting with social media and communications to ensure more residents hear about upcoming events. The committee hopes better outreach will make community activities more inclusive and accessible.

“We want people to know these events are for everyone,” Veroba said. “You don’t have to be on the committee to attend or get involved.”

The Community Wellness Committee also partners with local organizations like EPYC to deliver programming and welcomes new ideas from the public.

“We encourage community members to reach out if they see gaps or areas we could focus on more,” Veroba added. “It’s important that our website and events truly reflect the needs and interests of Estevan’s residents.”

Those interested in joining the Community Building Team or learning more can email estevancommunitywellness@gmail.com or visit the committee’s website.

“Let’s work together to make Estevan a stronger, healthier, and more connected place to live,” Veroba said.
