The deadline to register for school bus transportation to guarantee service on the first day of school is fast approaching.
According to Rocky View Schools (RVS), families must register for transportation by August 1 to guarantee busing on the first day of school.
“We strive to ensure a smooth first day of school for our riders, their families and our drivers,” said Senior Manager of Transportation, Morley Kostecky. “Registering punctually for transportation ensures all riders are assigned a bus route and bus stop in time for the beginning of the school year.”
Due to the complex route planning required to transport over 13,000 students to school smoothly, registrations submitted after the August 1 deadline won’t be processed in time for the first day of school. This means families could face delays of two to three weeks before their children can start riding the bus.
"Student bus services are provided to eligible students in Kindergarten – Grade 6 who live 1.5 kilometres or more from the school they attend, or to Grade 7–12 students who live two or more kilometres from the school they attend", shared the school division.
For the 2025/26 school year, resident student bus fees will be $395, while Kindergarten students who only ride once a day will pay $197.50. Students who need a second bus stop will pay an extra $395 for the additional seat on that route.
"To help new riders, RVS is pleased to once again host My First Ride from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 27 and 28 at the RVS Education Centre (2651 Chinook Winds Drive SW, Airdrie). My First Ride is not a drop-in event, and the program begins at 6 p.m. It is identical each night, and families are welcome to attend on the date that works best for them."
RVS transports nearly 13,500 students on 324 routes, including 2,100 students from the Calgary Catholic School District who attend school in Airdrie, Chestermere, and Cochrane.
“My First Ride is an exciting event we hold for new bus riders and their families every summer in partnership with our bus contractors,” said Kostecky. “Families are welcome to attend this free event, where they will learn about safely riding the school bus. Our staff and contractors will be on hand to answer questions and ensure students are ready to ride the school bus this year.”
