A cyclist is facing several charges after throwing his bike at a police officer in Portage la Prairie on July 17th.

Just before 6 p.m. yesterday, a General Investigation Service member was out on patrol when he spotted a man riding a bicycle that seemed far too small for him.

The cyclist veered into the road, forcing a nearby vehicle to swerve. Seeing this, the officer activated his emergency lights and tried to pull the man over. Instead of stopping, the man reportedly tried to leave.

When the officer approached on foot, the cyclist threw the bike at him and took off running.

While attempting to place the cyclist under arrest, a brief struggle followed. To gain control of the situation, the officer used a CEW (Conductive Energy Weapon).

The man initially gave a false name, but police later identified him as Shayne Peters, 40, of Long Plain First Nation. It was also discovered that Peters had two outstanding warrants, including one for aggravated assault.

He’s now facing several new charges, including assault with a weapon and resisting arrest.

Peters was held overnight and appeared in court today.
