A dramatic thunderstorm rolled through Airdrie and the surrounding areas Thursday night, putting on a dazzling lightning display that residents won’t soon forget.

Environment and Climate Change Canada had issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the region earlier in the evening, and by nightfall, the skies lit up with near-constant flashes of lightning, rumbling thunder, and brief periods of heavy rain.

Social media quickly filled with photos and videos from across the city, showcasing the breathtaking storm. One striking video submitted to DiscoverAirdire by Carly Goheen captured a direct lightning strike, illuminating the sky.

Resident Suzie Moore submitted a photo of a tree she said was hit as well last night on Big Hill Road. Residents are talking about the light show, sideways rain, localized flooding and sharing more pictures and videos.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. The storm was part of an unstable weather system sweeping through southern Alberta, bringing intense energy and the potential for large hail and damaging winds.

Environment and Climate Change Canada continues to monitor conditions, with more unsettled weather possible in the coming days. We will update if and when details emerge.
