The Jake Epp Public Library in Steinbach is offering a wide range of free summer programming for children, and staff say the response so far has been overwhelmingly positive.
Logan Plett, youth program coordinator at the library, says they’re currently running up to 27 programs each week to keep local kids engaged, learning and having fun during the summer months.
“We’re trying to include a big variety of programs for as many kids as possible,” said Plett. She explains they have programs split up by age groups, with programming for Kindergarten to Grade 3 in one space, and Grade 4 and up in another.
Weekly activities cater to creativity, literacy and fun
Each weekday features a different focus. Mondays are dedicated to arts and crafts and “learn to draw” classes, which have been the most popular so far. On Tuesdays, kids can join building projects and improv club sessions. Wednesdays include book clubs and puzzle club, while Thursdays alternate between movie screenings and board game time.
Weekly themes help guide the arts and crafts programming. For example, an “under the sea” week included making paper bag shark puppets and turtle crafts.
Plett says the goal is to offer a range of options to suit different interests and energy levels. Improv club has been a hit for both shy and outgoing kids.
“It helps them come out of their shells and practice thinking on their feet,” she explained. Plett notes, for younger kids, it’s lots of fast-paced games and laughter. Then for older kids, they do skits and explore different creative perspectives.”
Easy registration and drop-in options available
Most programs require online registration to help manage room capacities, and the library’s website allows parents to sign up by age group and activity. However, a few options — including puzzle club, board games, and story time in the park — are available on a drop-in basis with no registration required.
The programming is made possible with the help of two summer interns and Charlotte Penner, who manages adult programs and assists with classroom activities for kids.
Plett says they are also considering feedback and ideas for future sessions, including possibly launching a “learn to draw” class for adults.
Kids help decorate the library’s parade float
In addition to in-library activities, kids are getting involved in Steinbach’s summer parade. The library is preparing a themed float and involving participants in its design and decoration.
“We’re planning some crafts for the kids to make for the float,” said Plett. “The older kids will help make some key pieces for it, while the younger ones will decorate the sides.”
While full details of the float are still under wraps, Plett confirmed the theme will be book-related.
“It’s a fun way for kids to see their work displayed in the community,” she said.
More information available online
All upcoming programs are posted weekly on the Jake Epp Library website, as well as their Instagram and Facebook pages. Families can also sign up for the library’s email list to receive regular updates and reminders.
With several weeks of summer still ahead, Plett says there are plenty of opportunities for local families to get involved.
“Kids are really excited about what we’re offering, and we love seeing them create and connect through these programs.”
