Alberta RCMP are warning the public about a potentially deadly supply of illegal pills that resemble the anti-anxiety drug Xanax but contain a highly toxic opioid.
The counterfeit pills have tested positive for isotonitazene, a powerful synthetic opioid that can be fatal.
RCMP say the pills are being linked to the recent death of a 16-year-old and are urging the public to be on high alert.
“Parents, relatives, and other community members need to share this information as much as possible—especially now that school is out,” said RCMP Public Information Officer Cpl. Troy Savinkoff.
“Yes, the drugs are illegal, but more important is that the public knows the extreme danger that this dangerous replica can pose. We are working to interdict the supply and notify the public. Please look at the photos, share them with your kids, friends, and relatives, and let them know that these pills could kill them.”
The pills are described as:
-
Grey in appearance
-
Rectangular in shape
-
Imprinted with the letters “ONAX” on one side
-
Marked with the number “2” printed vertically on the other side
RCMP remind the public that authentic prescription medications should only be obtained from a licensed pharmacist. Taking pills from unverified sources poses a significant risk of harm or death.
Anyone with information about counterfeit prescription drugs is asked to contact their local police or call 310-RCMP.
