Parts of southern Saskatchewan received an estimated 40 to 70 millimetres of rain over the weekend, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.
An Environment Canada station at Hazenmore registered 55 mm of rain between Saturday and Sunday, while the station at Shaunavon recorded 40 mm.
Meteorologist Crawford Luke said radar estimates showed 40 to 70 mm fell over the weekend along and south of Highway 15.
"It seems to match up with a couple of the rainfall reports from Hazenmore and Shaunavon. It seems likely a lot of people along that stretch had pretty good rain this weekend,” said Luke.
While there were reports of nearly 76.2 mm of rain falling in Assiniboia in one hour on Saturday, Luke said the Environment Canada station must have missed the worst of the storm. The Assiniboia station registered 22.2 mm on Saturday and 23.7 mm total for the weekend.
In Moose Jaw, Environment Canada recorded 26 mm of rain over the weekend, almost evenly split between the two days. Saturday saw 14.5 mm, while 11.5 mm fell on Sunday.
"Definitely that area south of Moose Jaw, you can see there is a swath there where the rainfall amounts are significantly higher,” Luke said.
A tornado warning was issued Sunday evening for parts of southeastern Saskatchewan, including Grand Coulee, Balgonie, Wilcox, Indian Head and Vibank.
Luke said Environment Canada is investigating two potential touchdowns over the weekend.
One was a report from a storm chaser of a tornado in the Cadillac area on Saturday. Environment Canada also received photos of a possible tornado near Elstow.
Luke said he’s seen the photos of the Elstow tornado and it’s likely it will be confirmed today or later this week. Any damage from the tornadoes is unknown at this point.
Looking ahead, there is more rain in the forecast with a chance of thunderstorms into Tuesday and Wednesday, although the worst of it could hit southeast of Moose Jaw.
"I know we have some rain in the forecast for Moose Jaw, or at least a chance of showers. If you go further south towards the border, there is probably a higher chance of rain and a chance of a thunderstorm,” Luke said.
He added that the rest of the week is a “little unsettled” across most of the Prairies with on-and-off rainfall.
"We are expecting to get hot again later this week but we might still get into some evening thunderstorms when that heat arrives as well,” he said.
