Select streets in Winnipeg will soon be getting new temporary traffic calming curbs.

The goal of the new curbs is to improve safety while saving money.

“Every neighbourhood in our city deserves safer streets,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham in a news release. “That’s why we created a new road safety unit, to find practical, cost-effective ways to reduce risk and protect all road users. These traffic calming curbs are a smart solution that will make a difference right away.”

Installations of the curbs are a quick and affordable way to change the roadway layout.

The TC curbs will reduce safety risks until permanent traffic calming can be installed when a road is up for renewal or reconstruction, minimize conflict between pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles, and make it safer for all road users.

“Traffic calming curbs are an innovative solution to quickly address road safety concerns before major work takes place,” said Janice Lukes, Chairperson of the Standing Policy Committee on Public Works in a news release. “This is a cost-effective project that will enhance neighbourhoods and protect vulnerable road users.”

Locations for the curbs are selected where speeding is known to be a problem, intersections have wide corners, and visibility is poor at crosswalks.

There are over a dozen new locations this year including Air Force Way at Yellow Ribbon Greenway, Banning Street at Wellington Avenue, Cambridge Street, Hazel Dell Avenue and Watt Street. See the full list here

The yellow concrete curbs are marked by signage and poly posts to help drivers see them.

The City of Winnipeg is teaming up with Art City Inc. to install asphalt art at select locations to boost visibility further and beautify the neighbourhood.

The curbs are expected to be installed in August.
